Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi  is an Indian festival on which, traditionally, a sister ties a sacred thread or amulet called 'Rakhi' on her brother’s wrist and he promises to protect her. With time, there have been many improvisations but the spirit of Rakhi still remains about celebrating care, love and protection for our siblings.

It’s a festival where we spend quality time with our family and cousins, exchanging gifts, preparing our favourite foods and Indian festivals are really big on sweets like barfi, laddoos, gulab jamun, rasgulla.  In fact, we won’t be exaggerating when we say that our festivals are incomplete without our beloved mithaais, won’t you agree?

But unfortunately, many of these Indian sweets typically use ‘khoya’ or ‘mawa’, which is a type of dried and condensed animal milk, and is not fit for consumption by vegans, the health conscious or people leading a dairy-free life.

"Have just a bite, for the sake of the festival” or “Come on, don’t be so fussy, now”. It mostly gets tricky and/or annoying when our aunts and uncles ask us to compromise, right?

While some sweets like Kaju Katli are generally vegan-friendly but it's always a struggle to be sure. Well, the wait is now over because. . .

NEW LAUNCH: PRESENTING VEGAN GULAB JAMUN – TASTES JUST LIKE THE TRADITIONAL ONE!

Gulab Jamun needs no introduction. It is a fried ball of ‘khoya’, soaked in sugar syrup and is loved, not just by Indians but by people outside the country as well. Many people tried but couldn’t really make a vegan version that could be commercially sold pan-India and in all honesty, also compare to the animal milk-based version but Vijay Sweets seems to have accomplished this feat after a lot of r&d and trials and errors. They have recently launched a dairy-free version of this classic Indian delicacy and words of praise have already started pouring!
All one needs to do is, add water to the premix to make the dough and be done in a couple more quick steps!

The owner, Aravindan, of Coimbatore-based Vijay Sweets, says,

“As an entrepreneur, I constantly like to experiment with new products – however there have been certain restrictions such as making a product shelf stable, keeping the price of the product reasonable, bringing out alternatives that give a tough competition to the non-vegan version, remaining a small business while competing with the big brands.”

Traditionally, both Mysore Pak and Gulab Jamun are non-vegan. But the wonderful people at Vijay Sweets have worked hard at acing both the recipes and have received rave reviews for them from everyone – vegan or not.

And not forgetting, that no animals were harmed in the preparation of these sweets, making it guilt-free at multiple levels!

You can easily surprise your dadis and nanis (or anyone, really!) with all their pre-made mithais or quickly DIY your very own gulab jamun . Tell them that all the deliciousness is vegan, later. Haha!

Little about Vijay Sweets from the owner, Aravindan:

Vijay Sweets started as a family business. My family had been selling traditional South Indian sweets and snacks which included dairy based sweets for over 30 years.
I had always been an animal lover. During my college days I used to volunteer for an NGO called Humane Animal Society (HAS) and help in rescue of injured animals. At one point of time, I thought that I was being a hypocrite by saving few animals and harming few, that’s when I made the connection and my vegan journey started.
After my masters, I started working for a corporate in Bangalore. I realised there were hardly any alternatives to what I loved eating and I just decided to quit my job and take up my family business. However, I was convinced that I would not sell any non-vegan products because I wanted to follow my ethics.
Initially when I expressed my idea of changing the business into a completely vegan business, my parents were a little sceptical, but they never said no. Then I started to experiment on how to retain the taste and quality of sweets without dairy. It was a tough one but we’re getting there.
