Vegan India Movement Introduces Nationwide Vegan Population Survey

On World Vegan Day 2020, Vegan India Movement announced & launched the very first nationwide plant-based and vegan population survey. The Plant-Based and Vegan Population Survey - 2020 intends to be the most thorough and extensive of its kind. This initiative aims to accelerate and strengthen the vegan movement by providing and arming the activism community with relevant data about the status and current state of this demographic in our country.

VIM or Vegan India Movement is a pan-India collective of grassroots animal advocacy groups & activists who aim to throw light on the plight of animals used for food, clothing, entertainment, experimentation, etc. We realize this goal through various education-based forms of activism, including, but not limited to vegan/plant-based food advocacy, online activism, wall paintings, coordinated monthly events, and so on. The survey data will help the efficiency of activism and vegan businesses by being able to follow a data-driven approach.
 
The survey aims at making vegan and plant-based (PB) products easily accessible and convenient in India by helping businesses come up with more targeted vegan alternatives and better strategize their marketing, thereby encouraging more people to go vegan/plant-based. Also, it will help channelize animal rights activism better with a data-driven approach, as well as encourage the government and organizations to take initiatives to promote plant-based (PB) and vegan lifestyles by justifying the need with the obtained stats. A headcount of the vegan and plant-based population will give an idea about where we stand in our fight towards animal liberation, better health and the environment. The survey is open to anyone who identifies themself as vegan or plant-based. Some of the main parameters of the survey include pincode, which helps us derive the number of vegans/PB in different states, UTs and districts. It also helps us identify vegan clusters within a district which creates a hotspot for vegan businesses, accessibility of vegan products in various regions in India, what is the primary reason they went vegan/PB, and how long they've been vegan/plant-based for.

The study is important because animal rights and vegan advocates need this data to better equip themselves so they can use their time & resources effectively. Moreover, the emerging plant-based market needs this data to better market, promote and target their products to this demographic. We believe we have sufficient resources and emerging vegan activism groups to carry out this survey and we will be working with various organizations and businesses for the promotion of the survey. The implementation and analysis of the survey is done by VIM. The collected survey statistics will be shared with our survey promotion partners for their use. The survey is not limited to any city or state and is open to everyone currently residing in India.
