Zhuhai: The Second City in China To Ban Dogs, Cats and Wildlife Consumption

In the wake of coronavirus, more people have started to become aware of the relation between pandemics and animal consumption. After Shenzhen, Zhuhai has become the second city in mainland China to ban dog, cat and wildlife consumption. Shenzhen was the first Chinese city to ban this controversial practice earlier this month.

According to the Washington Post, "The next pandemic is already coming, unless humans change how we interact with wildlife, scientists say. The "wet market” in Wuhan linked to an early cluster of coronavirus cases, at least one store sold creatures including wolf cubs and masked palm civets for consumption. Such markets, experts say, feature stressed and ill animals stacked in cages, bodily fluids sprinkling down, as well as butchering — prime conditions for viral spillover."

According to the Humane Society International, an estimated 30 million dogs and 10 million cats are killed every year for human consumption. These include some cities in India as well. After the deadly spread of the Covid-19 virus,  believed to have originated in a wildlife market in Wuhan, China suspended the breeding, trading and consumption of wildlife and made the ban permanent.

Covid-19 has affected more than two million lives globally. Such bold steps must be taken by all countries. There are several wet markets in the world and unless a stricter ban is imposed, these remain a threat to us.
